Which Watercolor Brand Is The Best?

Ahhh... The ultimate question. Which watercolor is the best?

I don't know if you're going to like my answer, but here it is. I think they are all good. Well, most of them.

Let me tell you a cautionary tale. When I started painting with watercolors, I wanted to try them all, and I almost did... After years of painting and extensively using many brands, I reached this conclusion. The best watercolor is the one you can easily find for a good price.

I agree it's not that clear cut. There are differences and the more you paint the more specific your preferences will become. Format (tube or pan), formula and color range all play a major part.

Most major brands out there such as Daniel Smith, Schmincke, Sennelier, Winsor & Newton, White Nights, Aquarius, Rembrandt, Qor, Lukas, Hobein, Shinhan, just to name a few, have high quality and a good range of colors. As mentioned, there are differences. They come in different forms, different sized tubes, some have special colors that are absolutely worth seeking out.

However, when it comes to choosing a go-to paint, I recommend finding a brand that is as local to you as possible (same continent is a good place to start) and readily available. Buying local means you are paying less for shipping, import taxes and customs. You can get great paint for less.

Find a brand you enjoy and can easily get for a good price, make that your go-to. If you want to add more colors to your collection, and I highly recommend doing that, try unique colors from different brands. No brand gets it perfect (for you) all the time. Make your palette a superstart team of watercolors. Collect the best of the best from different brands!

Trying to answer this question, which is the best, led me to create a 2 part video series discussing just that. I talk about the color range, pricing, great sets to start with or add to an existing collection, formula and more.

I would love to hear your thoughts and feel free to join the discussion in the comments!

Have fun finding your perfect brand!
